Eagle Community Credit Union Launches First Credit Union BNPL in California

Eagle Community Credit Union (Eagle), a $366 million asset credit union headquartered in Orange County, announced that it is adding a Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) solution to its suite of online banking products.

Eagle is the first credit union to launch BNPL in California, and has selected equipifi, a BNPL SaaS designed for financial institutions, to power its solution. By connecting equipifi to its banking core and mobile app, Eagle’s BNPL solution extends personalized offers to members that align with their financial health on eligible debit card transactions. Members will be able to access BNPL to view and accept offers within seconds on Eagle’s online banking app.

“Our members look to us for reliable, flexible financial solutions,” said Bob Thompson, Chief Lending Officer at Eagle Community Credit Union. “Now, with the launch of BNPL to split payments over time, we are answering the call with an innovative product that is personalized, trusted, and readily available through their online banking experience.”

“Consumer expectations for their debit cards are changing due to the growing popularity of 3rd-party fintech BNPL,” said Bryce Deeney, CEO and co-founder of equipifi. “By launching BNPL, credit unions like Eagle Community Credit Union are meeting members where they are with their financial needs and payment preferences in their home banking app.”

BNPL offered to consumers from their primary financial institution, has seen a surge in uptake last year. The cardholder's relationship with their bank or credit union allows a seamless integration between their purchasing and banking experience. They are also extended pre-qualified BNPL offers that align with their financial goals and the institution's risk tolerance.
